LYNDEN, WA – Peoples Bank is proud to invite community members to a free Fraud Prevention Seminar on Wednesday, September 24, from 6:00–7:00 PM at the Lynden Library, located at 216 4th Street, Lynden, WA. The seminar will be led by Vanessa Boyd, Peoples Bank’s Fraud Investigations Manager, who brings extensive experience in fraud detection and prevention.
In an era where scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, this seminar aims to empower attendees with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and their loved ones. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported $12.5 billion in losses to fraud in 2024, with email being the top method scammers used to target victims. One in three people who reported a scam lost money, and investment scams alone accounted for $5.7 billion in losses.
These are some examples of topics that will be covered during the seminar:
- The most common scams affecting the community including: grandparent scams, IRS impersonations, and check fraud.
- Practical tips to verify communications, protect sensitive information, and recognize urgent scam tactics.
- Special guidance for seniors on preventing elder financial exploitation.
- Steps to take if you or someone you know becomes a victim of fraud.
“Fraud tactics are constantly evolving, and it’s more important than ever to stay informed,” said Vanessa Boyd. “Our goal is to help people recognize red flags, feel confident in protecting their personal information, and know what to do if they suspect fraud. Education is one of the strongest tools we have to fight back.”
